The Coolest Way to Press Play

Buzz, bleep, ziiiippp….most toys sound like a lack of creativity. So Brooklyn artist Richard Upchurch set out to create a Brand New Noise, a line of handcrafted recorders that would inspire us to do more than press play.  “Amidst all the chaos,” he explains, “I wanted to build something for kids and their parents, music makers and magicians. I wanted to build something that didn’t involve plastic pieces or prerecorded sound bytes.” The result is a coolly analog take on noise-making that’s about unlocking the power of our voices. Here Richard shares why making noise is always cool…

What’s the coolest thing about Brand New Noise?

It never ceases to amaze us how our little doo-dads can make anyone SMILE. It’s what keeps us going. We also love the fact that The Flaming Lips, The Black Keys, Bon Iver, David Byrne, RZA, and all of our moms have one and love it!

In high school, Brand New Noise would have won the superlative for…

Class Clown, for sure!

What’s your favorite way to cool off?

Anything involving ice cream.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve done recently?

Hearing Shantell Martin speak at MoCada and seeing the Kara Walker exhibit at the Domino Sugar Factory.  The questions each of their work and philosophy raise are awe inspiring.
