Otherland Candle Co.’s Founder Will Skip Work for Painted Pools and Frozen Gummy Bears

Wish you could make summer last forever? Enter Otherland Candle Co., the direct-to-consumer candle company that’s managed to distill the season down to its easy essence. It’s summer-right collection of scents are instant nostalgia (not to mention oh-so Instagram worthy), inspired by tennis balls, sea shells, and brown sugar. We sat down with founder Abigail Stone to get her take on summer in the city, from bucket-list goals to frozen gummy bears.

What’s your story in six words or less?

“Extra verve of the added touch” — life philosophy of putting in a little extra effort to create moments of beauty to savor every day. The saying was passed down from my grandmother to my mom to me.

Okay more importantly, what do you love most about summer (in NYC)?

It’s rooftop season. There’s nothing more glorious than being on an awesome NYC rooftop to take in spectacular west-side sunsets, fireworks, sunrise yoga, and just hanging up there with friends and good food. Bonus points: easier to get a last minute reservation at the best spots on the weekends.

What’s at the top of your summer bucket list?

We’re in our first year of business for Otherland, so this year my summer bucket list is NYC-centric.

  1. Have a round of oysters under the yellow-and-white striped canopy at Grand Banks, the schooner docked at Pier 25.
  2. Find the perfect hidden gem vintage Vladimir Kagan serpentine sofa on Craigslist and upholster in “melodramatic purple” for my new apartment.
  3. See my favorite, Toots & the Maytals, in concert.
  4. Test the cocktail vending machine at Existing Conditions, which opens today (near my apartment on 8th Street). I’m also curious about their Saratoga Paloma, “which uses mineral water drawn from Saratoga’s most saline spring.” Could be some good candle inspiration there.

When it’s too hot to be outside you can find me….

Taking refuge in cool corner of a museum (bonus points for humidity control)! Or in a subterranean speakeasy cocktail bar.

When’s the last time you played hooky and what did you get up to?

Not entirely surprising — I snuck out to see the Hockney exhibit at the Met right before it closed! Couldn’t let those pools slip away.

What’s your go-to frozen situation (dessert, cocktail, popsicle)?

Cote has this AMAZING frozen drink called Friesling that’s so perfectly icy-cool-sweet-refreshing and finished off with frozen grapes. They really nail the consistency–no ice chunks, just smooth and airy deliciousness. Also a shout-out to those frozen milk chocolate covered banana slices from Trader Joe’s and frozen Haribo gummy bears.
