Original Asks: How FriendsWithYou Mix Art, Magic, and Good Vibes

The art world can get an exclusionary rap. Enter: FriendsWithYou, the L.A. based art making duo of Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III, known for their sunny vibes and mission of cultivating inclusivity. Their works include brightly colored large-scale installations, animated videos, and inflatable playgrounds, created to “envelope the visitors and transcend them into a higher state of self awareness.” This Fall, Peanuts tapped the duo for their Global Artist Collective and gave them permission to turn Charlie Brown’s frown all the way upside down.  Here, Sam and Tury share what originality means to them and the meme accounts that inspire them on the daily.

Define originality in six words or less:

Trust in yourself

How do you stay original and continue to create new work when everything is out there all the time? Just make what comes natural to us. And give ourselves the freedom to evolve that.

Who creatively do you look to as a true, unfiltered original? There are so many incredible humans / creatives out there, it’s impossible to name.

For GAC you’ve drawn on the work of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz to create something new, can you talk about your process?  We love Peanuts, we love the feeling and it was something we could relate to and be inspired by.

Watch the guys talk about their process here and read our quick fire Qs below…

QUICK FIRE:

What’s one fact we can’t find out about you on Google? Everything about me is not on Google haha

If you could meet anyone, who would it be and why? I want to meet the Dalai Lama and hug him, hang out and talk.

The last original piece of advice you received? I don’t know, I feel like everyone is enlightened somehow and we all know things… probably something sweet from a meme, something encouraging me to make myself better and better. It’s so much information these days.

Three items you don’t leave home without? Who knows?

First place you go when you land in NYC? Damn, my sister’s apartment or Russ and Daughters, again this is an impossible question… sometimes I land in NYC and my feet don’t touch the ground I move so fast.

What is your favorite book? The Incal a graphic novel by Moebius and Jodorowsky

Last Instagram rabbit hole you went down: Ha! Howard the alien, I feel his dance is powerful in a healing way, it’s strange, I love the art kids are making now. I have a top secret meme account that I collect my favorites.
