Mark Your iCal For The Thing Book Launch

Given our digital fixation, The Thing Quarterly, a publication that sends art objects by the likes of Dave Eggers and Miranda July to subscribers, might at first seem out of touch with the “virtual reality.” The thing is: it’s become a success story (currently on its 24th issue.) Created by visual artists John Herschend and Will Rogan , the founding idea was to democratize access to art by engaging both artists and collectors in a direct dialogue centered around a single object. This year’s subscribers will receive conceptual works by the fashion designers behinds Rodarte, Brian Roettinger, Gabriel Orozco, and Michelle Grabne.

Building on that idea, the duo have now collaborated to launch “The Thing Book,” a single object that proposes the question “what is a book?” of more than 30 creative visionaries. Contributions range from Miranda July’s errata slip and Johnathan Lethem’s Foster Wallace-esque footnotes as well as original fiction and artworks.

To mark the book’s binding of artistic vision, join its creators alongside the New York Art Book Fair and the founders of Cool Hunting at STORY Friday, September 26. There will be beer by Harpoon Brewery and contributors on hand to talk book “things.”

Friday September 26, 7-9pm; MUST RSVP to
