Floating To Fame: FriendsWithYou Make Their Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade Debut
Up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane…it’s FriendsWithYou! Keep your eye out for Little Cloud, the LA-based art duo’s signature character, as “Cloudy” makes his debut at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Measuring 30 feet wide, Cloudy will be buoyed by 38 handlers to ensure he floats down Fifth Avenue 40 feet above the ground. Working as FriendsWithYou, co-collaborators Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III have been bringing positive vibes to the art world since 2002, and introduced Little Cloud in a 2010 animated short. Since then Cloudy has been a central figure in their work and the two have reinterpreted the symbol of light and hope as a public sculpture, a lamp and even as part of the Peanuts gang (check out his appearance in How Original).
The goal is to create communal experiences that make you feel something beyond the self and into the whole, basically the goal of all spiritual endeavors, and in doing so we use a very simple graphic language. – Samuel Borkson
Macy’s has featured a variety of contemporary artists, from KAWS to Jeff Koons, as part of the parade’s “Blue Sky Gallery” series. The parade’s producer Susan Tercero told The New York Times that more than 50 million people are expected to tune to see Cloudy and the newest balloons make their debut.
To celebrate the launch of Cloudy, our favorite Brooklyn pin brand, PinTrill joined forces with FriendswithYou to create a series of exclusive items for Macy’s. Discover the smiley pieces and get your float on after the parade ends and Cloudy goes back to the studio.
