In Conversation With:
Dr. Michael Apa

In what seems like a lifelong calling to disrupt and advance the cosmetic dental industry, Dr. Michael Apa took a shine to to teeth from an early age. Now this “dental rockstar” gives Hollywood’s finest a beautiful, natural smile, but there’s more to his work than that. Read on to see who inspires him and what he brings to the cosmetic dental industry! (And stop by STORY pick up Apa Beauty products, which both whiten and strengthen teeth!)

Tell us about your background. How did you become a “dental rockstar”!?
It came down to a very clear vision of who I wanted to be and how I wanted to live my life. From a very young age, around five, I knew I wanted to be a dentist. At the age of 16, I discovered a guy name Larry Rosenthal, who was the original dental rockstar. I went to NYU to be near him and did everything I could as a dental student to be close to him. I was hired out of school by him and from there the rest was history. I was like a sponge, taking the things I could use and throwing out the things I didnt feel fit me. I used all of that information to create my style of dentistry that is what it is today. He was and remains a mentor that has definitely shaped how I approach my daily life today.

If you weren’t a cosmetic dentist what you would be?
If I wasn’t a dentist, or if I was raised to think bigger, I probably would’ve dabbled in many things. I would’ve gone to business school and probably taken some acting classes and seen where both would’ve taken me.

Any daily rituals?
My mornings are always a routine. I usually wake up around 5AM. I head to the gym or workout with my personal trainer. Then it’s off to Starbucks for an Iced Venti Quad Espresso before heading to the office.

Favorite place to show off a smile in NYC?
The US Open! I go every year.

Who inspires you?
Elon Musk. I personally find all of the components of Elon’s life truly inspirational, especially in a world of such self-entitlement. It’s not wealth that drives people like Elon, it’s knowing that he has the ability to change the world for the better. There is no trick to fulfilling your dreams, it takes passion, hard work, and perseverance through your darkest hour—it’s not luck.

Any hidden talents?
I have a wicked forehand in tennis.

What are you most proud of with Apa Beauty?
When I set out to create Apa Beauty, I wanted three things: products that are simple and effective, products that bring out your smile easily on a daily basis, and products that are beautiful enough to display. A great smile is a beauty essential. I am proud to be a pioneer in introducing a beauty product range that offers both health and cosmetic benefits.

One item always found in medicine cabinet?
Apa tooth gloss.

What’s a fun fact we can’t learn about you from Google?
I love to cook. Putting a meal together really brings together my strong senses of creativity and time efficiency.

Apa Beauty in six words?
High-end beauty and oral care.
