This Give Back Candle Is #HeForShe in the Brightest Way Possible
Today, the conversation around feminism is changing towards a more inclusive stance – because gender inequality impacts us all. For all the #HeforShe talk, it’s the actions of men like Ted Barber that are helping to make it real. A former poverty relief worker, Barber is the founder of Prosperity Candle – a give back candle company that focuses on empowering women refugees impacted by war and natural disasters in Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti and even in the United States. Ahead how Barber stands with fearless women and aims to help create a brighter future for us all.
What does #HeforShe mean to you?
Equal opportunity everywhere for everyone, in all facets of life. It’s about creating a balanced society. And when it comes to business, I will invest in women every time. Women more often spend money on their children’s education and well-being, which helps break the cycle of poverty.
How are you shining a light on gender equality with Prosperity Candle?
We focus on empowering women in and from regions of conflict, helping to create opportunities for them to thrive as business and community leaders and set an example for the next generation. Each of our candles send a message of support to the woman who made it – building a brighter future for all.
Who are these women?
The women we work with are fearless, rising the most difficult of circumstances to build a brighter future for themselves and their families. Our Production Manager, Moo Kho joined the company as an apprentice candle-maker after she relocated to the U.S. in 2008. In just 5 years, she has journeyed from refugee with no opportunities and fading hope to senior management and a stake in a U.S. social enterprise.
In working with such fearless women, do you have any advice for girls today?
Do not accept that any opportunity is closed to you, or that you cannot realize your dreams. Gender need not play a role in achievement.
