A ’90s Mix Curated by Our Storytellers
The favorite ’90s tunes of our #RememberWhenSTORY partners were a hit (in headphones) amongst New Yorkers. So we decided to keep jammin’ and compile a follow-up Spotify playlist featuring the throwback songs that make our Storytellers get jiggy with it. Get your ’90s fix here to start the tubthumping.
Picking one fave ’90s jam is a task I’m not sure even Kevin Sorbo would be up to! Do I go with my first CD single (“You Gotta Be” by Des’ree), my favorite video choreography (“If” by Janet Jackson), or my most listened-to (basically the entire Rent soundtrack)? Ultimately, I have to go with a track that still makes anyone who hears it get up on the dance floor: “Vogue” by Madonna!
The ’90s were so eclectic, it’s too hard to pick one!! “Bitch” by Meredith Brooks, Weezer’s “The Sweater Song,” and “No Rain” by Blind Mellon are definitely top contenders, but there’s nothing like Sublime’s “Doin Time” that brings me back to the feeling that school’s out and the next few months are filled with bike rides with friends, pool days, and finding some (relatively tame) trouble to get into.
“Hero” by Mariah Carey is my number one. Mariah was my real-life hero all through the ’90s! I would say something by Boyz II Men, but I couldn’t even pick a favorite. The playlist wouldn’t be complete without one of their tracks, though, so throw on “Mowtownphilly.”
“My favorite ’90s song is “Creep” by TLC. Why is none of your business. Keeping that on the down low.”
“I used to listen to a local radio station every night before I went to bed, and “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child was in their rotation for at least a year of my life. Now every time it comes on, I’m transported right back to the ’90s!”
“When my friends and I would drive down to the shore in the summer, we’d roll down the windows and bump “No Diggity” by Blackstreet. It’s still a piece of my go-to summer soundtrack.”
